Today I received a sample box from Obscura Fragrancia. I have mentioned this particular perfume house before in my perfume glamour magic post, where I bring up their perfume Midnight Church. This scent suited my needs perfectly for an incense smell. As I adore obscure and peculiar perfume, I wanted to try out the other fragrances they offer. I had a strong pull to trying out Old Library, Ghost Veil and Baba Yaga, as the scent profile and the pictures seemed very intriguing. The other three I picked out based on what seemed interesting to me.
The perfume came in beautiful packaging with a wax sealed letter that provides further information about their perfumes and the perfume house. The sample box comes with six 3mL glass perfume sample bottles (of your choosing), as well as test strips. For my first impressions I tried the samples out on both my skin and the strips. As I find it hard to use words to describe smells, I also wanted to provide a scent story that captures what I envision when smelling these perfumes.
First Impressions
Baba Yaga
Baba Yaga opens up with a forest masculine scent. It’s definitely warm, and reminds one of a forest, but I wouldn’t consider it a green floral scent. After the opening it moves onto a lighter tea scent. Once this then settles the warm masculine scent lingers in the background. The opening was quite heavy for my taste, but I do enjoy the base note it settles into once the top notes dissipate. I’d have to give this one more time and see how it lets itself play out, before I can settle on whether I like it or not.
Scent story
Envision yourself sitting at a pond with a cup of freshly brewed black tea. You find yourself in a light trance state as you are observing the scenery around you, enchanted by the smell of the water that blends in with the tea you are slowly sipping.
Coffin heaven
This one brings a heavy contrast to Baba Yaga. It opens up with a soft silky scent, that could be described as a gothic vanilla scent. The vanilla strongly pulls through and lingers on during the remainder of the wear. However, it seems to be laced with something darker, stemming from the amber and musk, which only seems to grow in intensity as time moves on. A sweet undertone is brought to the perfume by the almond and anise.
Scent story
You are a vampire wearing a black satin slip dress, sitting at the window of an old Mansion, letting the smell of the old stone and wood mesh in with your eternal beauty. As you lock eyes with your next victim, you unveil your true nature.
Old Library
Upon first whiff I could already tell that this one was going to be my favourite. It opens up with quite a sweet incense scent, like a sweeter version of Midnight Church. As the vanilla makes it way for the Oliban, Labdanum and Woody notes, the scent becomes incredibly smokey. It reminds me deeply of Coeur Noir by Heretic, I can see this perfume be a good dupe for it.
Scent story
Your fingers move across the shelves of the hidden library you found in an old town you seemingly passed by. All of sudden you feel a deep urge to stop at this specific book. You pull the book off the shelf and lie it down on a vintage looking coffee table. Upon opening it the smell of the aged paper fills your nose, taking one more deep breath as you ready yourself for the knowledge that’s soon to be bestowed upon you.
Cursed Island
Upon smelling this scent I get hit by a soft nostalgic feeling, like a deep longing for something unknown. It’s definitely not an aquatic scent, but rather a soft summery scent that’s reminiscent of linen, which I assume stems from the cashmere. As it starts quite fresh, it quickly lets it’s story be told by the heart and base note of rose and praline, which give it a soft dark gourmand touch. I wouldn’t necessarily describe this one as obscure but rather a solid summer and/or spring scent that could be appealing to a broader group of people.
Scent story
As a pirate you live your life on sea, charting the unknown parts of the world. Today you set sail for an island that’s seemingly empty. As you move closer to it, your nostrils are filled with a sweet floral whiff. A sweet sultry voice aches you to come closer and you give into the allure. The last thing your nose catches before being pulled into the deep blue is the soft Cashmere of the golden brown hair wrapping around you.
Ghost veil
A lifting purple flowery scent fills my senses upon first whiff. I would consider it this perfume the younger sister to Nosferatu Heretic due to the Violet. Where Nosferatu can be quite strong and petrichor, this one is light, airy and more appealing and alluring. The Magnolia and Purple flower shine heavily through, the floral scent deepens as the perfume settles onto the skin and blend with the musk at the base of this perfume. This one would be absolutely lovely for spring.
Scent story
Apparitions pass through your house ever so often as you have opened yourself up to their world. But after that one stormy night, the spirit of a woman long lost to time had lingered. Every time you walk the hallways of your house, the soft smell of Violet and Magnolia reminds you of her presence.
The Fallen One
Out of all the six scents in this sample box, I’d call this one the most masculine. It heavily screams Marsian energy. Even the sample bottle signifies the strong contrast with the others, being more orange than yellow/green. This is called back in it’s scent profile. It’s a rich spicy warm scent, with a hefty woody undertone. The Bourbon is more prominent in this one than in Baba Yaga. I would call this a dutiful autumn scent.
Scent story
You read the next name on your list, crossing each and every one off as you return the ways in which they have wronged you. You’ve lost track of time and space, all you know is your longing for vengeance. The lust of justice, as you might see fit. You rapidly move your way among the townfolk that cast you out. How dare you not indulge their morals and rules?
In conclusion
My first impressions have been quite prominent in this post. Although I can’t give a final ordeal on whether I like every individual scent or not, as I have to test them out over time, I can most definitely give a ranking based on my first impressions.
Firstly, I want to point out that I wouldn’t necessarily purchase a full size bottle for any of these scents, not because they are not beautifully created, but because I can’t imagine myself finishing the bottle. As they are quite particular scents, and I own quite a lot of perfumes, I know I wouldn’t be reaching as often for them as I should.
That being said, I think Old Library is for sure my favourite out of the six. Followed by both Cursed Island and Ghost Veil, though that second place might be due to the current season of summer, where both scents fit in nicely. I’d give third place to The Fallen One, it’s scent profile is quite intriguing and I can see it be perfect for glamour magic. Coffin heaven takes fourth place. Although I do adore the scent, the Vanilla is a bit too prominent for me. Last place is given to Baba Yaga. However, I definitely can see that Baba Yaga is a scent that needs to grow on me. It’s definitely a scent I have never smelled before, which often means it takes time for me to get used to it.
